Transporting a patient to another city: how to organise it

Long-distance transport is not a taxi with a stretcher but a medical operation lasting up to a day: assessment, the right crew, agreement with the receiving hospital, a route with rest stops. It can all be arranged in one phone call if you know what the dispatcher will ask.

What to do right now

  1. Describe the patient

Diagnosis, mobility, oxygen, drains, feeding tube, catheter, weight. Send the latest discharge summary — the crew is selected from it.

  2. Define both ends

Where we collect — home, hospital, station; where we deliver — address, department, who receives. The receiving hospital must confirm a bed.

  3. Choose the crew

A stable patient — a standard crew at 150 ₽ per kilometre both ways. On oxygen, in the acute phase of a stroke, on monitors — an ICU ambulance at 200 ₽ per kilometre.

  4. Calculate

The calculator on the intercity page gives the price by distance immediately: mileage both ways plus the call-out. Procedures en route are charged separately.

  5. Sign the contract and pay the deposit

The contract fixes the route and the price; 50 % in advance, the rest after handover.

Call an ambulance if

  • Discharge from a Moscow clinic to a home region
  • Transfer from a regional hospital to a Moscow clinic for surgery or investigation
  • Return home after treatment beyond the Moscow Region
  • Relocating a bedridden relative to another city
  • Repatriation after an injury on holiday

What not to do

  • Do not order a standard crew "to save money" if the patient is on oxygen — nothing can be changed en route
  • Do not set off without a confirmed bed at the destination
  • Do not expect the city tariff for an intercity trip — it is charged per kilometre
  • Do not forget documents and a day’s supply of medication

What the crew does

  • The crew collects the patient, transfers to the stretcher, carries down and loads
  • Monitoring en route, oxygen, infusions, pain relief; stops every 2–3 hours
  • Contact with relatives, a second driver on long routes
  • Handover at the admissions department or to relatives with documents

Questions

How much does transport from Moscow to Kazan cost?

About 820 km: standard crew — 1,640 km × 150 ₽ + 6,000 ₽ = 252,000 ₽; ICU ambulance — 1,640 × 200 + 15,000 = 343,000 ₽. The calculator gives exact figures for your city.

Can a relative travel with the patient?

Yes, one escort seat is available in the cabin, and it often matters to the patient.

What if the patient deteriorates on the way?

The crew treats to emergency care standards; if life is threatened, the patient is taken to the nearest hospital on the route and the journey continues after stabilisation.
