IV drip at home: indications, contents, price

A drip is not "vitamins for energy" but a way to replace fluid and salts quickly and to give drugs when the oral route fails. It is given on indication, prescribed by the crew doctor, and in competent hands it is as safe at home as in hospital.

What to do right now

Genuine indications
Dehydration from poisoning or vomiting, high fever with inability to drink, alcohol withdrawal, weakness after surgery, flare-ups of chronic disease on a doctor’s prescription.
The doctor decides the contents
Saline solutions, glucose, electrolytes and, where needed, anti-emetics, antispasmodics, vitamins, liver support. Not from a menu but from the clinical picture.
Duration
Usually 30–90 minutes. The paramedic or doctor stays throughout, monitoring blood pressure and how you feel.
What to prepare
A place to lie down, the list of medication you take, and any allergies — these must be declared.
After the drip
Half an hour of rest, fluids, advice for the next 24 hours. A repeat drip only on indication.

Call an ambulance if

Vomiting or diarrhoea with signs of dehydration: dry mouth, weakness, no urine for 6–8 hours
Fever above 39 °C for more than a day with inability to drink
Alcohol withdrawal with tremor, rapid pulse and anxiety
Weakness after surgery or infection in an elderly patient who refuses food and fluids
Migraine or hypertensive crisis unrelieved by tablets — on a doctor’s prescription

What not to do

Do not order "detox" or "vitamin cocktails" without indications — no benefit, real risk
Do not hide allergies or the drugs you take
Do not stand up quickly afterwards
Do not accept a drip from someone who has not asked about your condition or measured your blood pressure

What the crew does

Examination, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, ECG and blood sugar if needed
Peripheral cannula placement and choice of solution
Presence throughout the infusion with monitoring
Advice afterwards; admission if there is no effect

Questions

How much does a drip at home cost in Moscow?

Call-out 6,000 ₽ inside the MKAD plus infusion by the price list — from 7,000 ₽ per 30 minutes, drugs charged separately. A typical visit with a drip is 15,000–25,000 ₽.

Can it be given to a child?

Yes, for dehydration, on indication and with the parent’s consent. Children under 14 have a separate price-list item and require experience with small veins.

Who administers it — a doctor or a nurse?

A paramedic or doctor from the ambulance crew. A nurse cannot legally set up an infusion at home without a doctor’s prescription.
