What to take to hospital: a checklist

In an emergency admission you have about ten minutes to pack while the crew completes the paperwork, and families usually fill a bag with everything except what is needed. The list below is what makes the first day in hospital bearable — and what is better left at home.

What to do right now

Documents first
Passport, insurance policy, SNILS, referral or dispatch order, discharge summaries, images on disc, a list of medication with doses. Keep it all in one folder to hand to the admissions doctor.
Regular medication
The hospital may not have it in the first hours: blood-pressure drugs, insulin, anticoagulants, anti-epileptics — take the boxes.
A minimum of belongings
Phone and a long charging cable, slippers with a back, a change of underwear, a tracksuit or dressing gown, towel, toothbrush, wet wipes, toilet paper, a cup and spoon, half a litre of water.
For a child
Birth certificate, the parent’s passport, insurance policy; for the accompanying adult — their own documents, change of clothes, slippers; a toy or tablet.
For a bedridden patient
Nappies, pads, skin products, a drinking cup, a razor — hospitals do not always supply these immediately.

Call an ambulance if

Emergency admission: the crew waits ten minutes — documents, medication, phone, slippers; relatives bring the rest later
Planned admission: the full list prepared the day before
A child: plus documents and belongings for the accompanying adult
A bedridden patient: plus care supplies for the first day
Intensive care: documents and medication only — belongings and phones are not allowed in

What not to do

Do not bring valuables, large sums of money or jewellery — they will be removed at admissions
Do not bring glassware, sharp objects or immersion heaters
Do not bring strong-smelling or perishable food
Do not bring your own blood-pressure monitor or glucose meter unnecessarily — the ward uses its own

What the crew does

The crew reminds you about documents and medication before leaving
The document folder is handed to the admissions doctor against signature
Belongings travel with the patient to the ward
Anything forgotten can be brought to the ward later by relatives

Questions

We forgot the insurance policy — will they refuse?

In an emergency you will be admitted with a passport; the policy can be brought later or the number quoted from the database. Planned admission without a policy is paid.

What about the phone in intensive care?

Phones and belongings are not allowed into intensive care; give the ward number to relatives and agree call times.

How much does transport to hospital by a private crew cost in Moscow?
